The Absurdity of Exercise

Step back for a minute and look at why we, as a society, are encouraged to exercise. I guess you could begin at any time in our history but let’s choose the industrial revolution as our starting point. Up until that time most Americans were living in rural areas performing manual labor on farms and ranches. The average amount of physical activity could be easily measured in hours or an entire day. As decades passed and technology developed, more Americans moved away from the farm to make it big in the cities. Instead of toiling behind the plow blade they stood for hours behind machines pulling levers and turning wheels. Physical activity had reduced significantly to only a few hours a day. Eventually, the assembly line began to become automated, and Americans transitioned themselves into sitting for countless hours behind a desk. Physical activity had reached an all-time low as the obesity rate, joint pain, tendinitis, and other maladies began to increase. Today’s world is even more technologically advanced with countless ways to move less. Society now measures their activity level in minutes or even seconds! Programs such as “8 Minute Abs,” “Tabata Protocol,” “4 Minutes to Fitness” are prime examples that even a handful of minutes may prove to be a challenge for most de-conditioned workers.

With this exponential diminishment of movement comes the breakdown of the human form. Most of the illnesses, aches, and pains in today’s culture can be directly related to a lack of purposeful movement. Our society has reached such a point with it is a lack of movement that facilities were created to encourage movement back into a person’s life: gyms.

So we are told to go to a health club and get some exercise. After years of minimal physical activity, we become members of an exclusive spa. The entry level instructor gives you your “first workout” as part of your membership. Ironically the workout involves pushing handles or elbow pads, pulling bars, lifting leg rollers and pressing a metal plate with your feet….all while sitting on a comfortable, upholstered seat! I thought the problem was we were sitting too much? So we go to a place to get exercise, and they have us sit!?! This could be on an episode of Candid Camera. Where’s Alan Funt???

Most bodies do not need to experience more sitting. What most bodies need is to move with the least amount of restriction and the most amount of control in three-dimensional space. After months or years of this technologically advanced world, the human structure begins to get contorted away from it is optimal position. We begin to see postural distortions which often lead to joint or soft tissue pain. If the situation is left unchecked, a person may elect to get surgical intervention to replace worn parts because of compromised movements.

Movement is the key to restoring function to the body and getting out of pain (not managing it). It does not necessarily mean you have to lift weights. In fact, some bodies are not in a state where weight lifting would be advantageous; it could be detrimental. What is important is to find educated professionals who are trained to restore proper movement back into the body.

Pain is the body’s wonderful way of communicating to the brain that something is not quite right. Our passion is finding out what the body is saying, find out the why behind it, and creating movement strategies that address the true problem.

The movements you perform may not be the traditional strength training exercises of yore. Instead, they may look more like movements of everyday life, where the body is moving in an integrative fashion and not isolated.
