Sun Salutation (Yoga)

Fit to Paddle

The Paddler’s Guide to Strength and Conditioning by Rocky Snyder

Watch your habits, for they will become your character. Develop your character, for it becomes your destiny.

This chapter is devoted to the Sun Salutation; a series of gentle flowing yoga poses that are often performed as a morning wake up routine. The Sun Salutation can also be performed as a warm up routine prior to paddling. This series of movements enhances flexibility of the spine and legs and chest while strengthening the arms and shoulders and enhancing the body’s sense of balance and coordination.

Try to hold each pose for five to fifteen seconds before transitioning to the next. Perform the series of twelve poses three to four times. When performing the lunge position be sure to alternate legs with each set.

Concentrate to maintain an awareness of your breath while entering and exiting each pose. When breathing, be sure to inhale into the diaphragm; filling the mid-section as deep as possible.
