Radio and Books
One day in August 2002, a trainer in Rocky’s studio who worked for a radio station down the street came in while Rocky was training the president of O’Neill Wetsuits. He came up to them and said “Hey Pat, would you know anyone in your company that would do a surf report for the radio station?” Pat said “Why don’t you just get Rocky to do it? He surfs all the time, and he’s the weather nut, so get him to do it.” On that day, Rocky’s Surf & Ski Report on KSCO 1080am got started. Almost 20 years later it’s still going strong every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday morning at 6:25 am.
That opened up a conversation about surfing and conditioning so Rocky asked Pat, being in the surf industry all his life, if he knew of anything that had been written or published on how to condition surfers and get them in great shape. Pat said no, so Rocky decided that was his next project. So Rocky wrote a book on how to condition for surfing. The success of “Fit to Surf: The Surfer’s Guide to Strength and Conditioning” opened up opportunities to write more books.
Rocky spent his youth whitewater canoeing and doing other adventure sports while in the Boy Scouts in New England and continued to pursue those activities throughout his life. He thought about writing about what he knew about adventure sports and combine it with his knowledge about strength and conditioning. His second book, “Fit to Paddle, is about conditioning for rafting, canoeing, and kayaking. Following that was Rocky’s third book, “Fit to ski and snowboard: The Skier’s and Boarder’s Guide to Strength and Conditioning.”
After almost 30 years of professional training and education Rocky has published his fourth book, “Return to Center: Strength Training to Realign the Body, Recover from Pain, and Achieve Optimal Performance.” It is the culmination of his three decades of developing a unique methodology that breaks away from outdated, conventional approaches.
